processing, construction and maintenance, dissemination
and services, research and development on the
application of national fundamental geographical
information, as well as the planning, design and
implementation of major surveying and mapping projects,
with the objective to establish the Geo-spatial
Framework for Digital China. It functions as the main
node in the national information highway and has also
become a window open to society providing geographical
information services. In recent years, NGCC has paid
great attention to technological innovation. It actively
pursues the construction of the fundamental geographic

Bureau of Surveying and Mapping of China (SBSM), Chinese
Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM) is the largest
multi-disciplined comprehensive research institution in
China in the field of surveying and mapping. CASM is
mainly engaged in the basic theoretical study and
application research on surveying and mapping sciences.
CASM provides also technical support to the basic
national mapping programs, major engineering survey
projects and important GIS projects. CASM is an
authorized institution for awarding MSc and PhD degrees
with nine supervisors for PhD students and 25
supervisors for MSc students. There are currently over
70 students for both degrees studying in CASM. With
approval of central educational authority, CASM has
established a post-doctoral research unit, where four
senior scientists have already enrolled for their
postdoctoral research. Among all its scientific
researchers, there is one Academician of Chinese Academy
of Engineering, 23 professors and 77 associate
professors. |

The Institute of Remote Sensing Application , Chinese
Academy of Sciences (IRSA/CAS), founded in 1979, is a
comprehensive research institution engaged in basic
theory, cutting edge technology, application methods and
research in applications of remote sensing. The aims of
IRSA are to develop the theory and technology of remote
sensing information sciences; to provide scientific
support of macro decision making for the nation's
sustainable development; to become a base for China 's
remote sensing for resources and environment, a base for
remote sensing engineering application and
industrialization, and a base for fostering high level
remote sensing scientists. IRSA consists of three
departments for scientific research and applications,
which are the Laboratory of Remote Sensing Information
Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Remote Sensing
Application Center for Resources and Environment, and
National Engineering Research Center for Geoinformatics.
There are 236 staff members in the Institute, of which
four are Academicians, 84 Professors and Associate
Professors, and Assistant Professors.
The Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR/CAS) was born in 1999, based on a reorganization of two institutions, namely the Institute of Geography and the Commission for Integrated Survey of Natural Resources. As a premier research base in China on Geography, natural resources and information sciences, IGSNRR is involved in studies on dynamics of the land-based ecosphere and its reaction to global change, regional resources and environment, ecosystem and its network, and geoinformatics. The institute consists of 4 research sections, 4 laboratories, one information center on resources & environment and one GIS industrialization center.
